El Rocio (Parque Nacional de Doñana) – 21.3.2022

Luckily the weather forecast was wrong, and it turned out to be quite a fair day.

There are a couple of visitor centers around El Rocio. At the first one, La Rocina, we did a 4 km tour.

We saw lots of flamingos and glossy ibis …

… a purple Gallinule (with huge feet!) and spoonbills …

… herons, eagles and geese …

… different ducks, and many more glossy ibis.

The park is lovely with its pine trees and ferns …

The birdwatching places are built nicely.

The next visitor center was the Palacio del Acebro.

The blue flower always looks sad to me, because it bows its head.

The bird with the blue tail is an azure-winged magpie. It sounds much nicer than a normal magpie 🙂

This park was full of cork oaks!

Some were embracing each other 🙂

Great trees – I can’t decide which ones to put in this blog…

Some are very gnarled.

The third center was a disappointment for us. The lagoon had no water whatsoever. A warden there told us that the climate change is to blame for that…

At the coast, in Matalascañas, we saw some interesting sculptures:

Towards the evening we visited the first park again, to see some action (the birds tend to gather in the evening). We saw lots of birds flying!

Driving back to the campsite, through El Rocio, we were very surprised: there are no tarmaced roads at all in this village! Of course, due to the heavy rain in the last few days, there were a lot of puddles!
