The view from Praia da Polvoeira was just as great the following morning !

In Sitio, the old part of Nazaré:

It lies high above the sea.

Walking to the Forte de São Miguel Arcanjo.

This fort is originally from the 16 century, and there is a little museum devoted partly to surfing.

The Interpretation Center describes the impact of the Nazaré Canyon. This canyon is about 5000 meters deep (!) and 230 km long, and it ends just off the coast there. This causes very huge waves: in winter they can be more than 20 meters high!

One can see the waves building up in the north, whereas in the south they are not half as high !

Many surfing records were made in Nazaré! Unfortunately we didn’t see any surfers. The sea was probably too wild…

It was fascinating to watch the waves!

Near our overnight stay:

Gorgeous evening atmosphere …

… with a sunset behind clouds.
