I felt like I was in the wrong movie. After being in Iceland for more than 10 weeks, and hardly ever seeing any other cars, we were flabbergasted to see so many cars all at once!

Ich fühlte mich im falschen Film. Nachdem wir mehr als 10 Wochen in Island herumgefahren sind, ohne je viele Autos zu sehen, waren wir entgeistert, so viele Autos aufs Mal zu sehen!

The reason was the volcano Meradalir that erupted three days ago, and hadn’t stopped yet. Security people and an ambulance were about, and there were already signs with rules of conduct.

Der Grund war der Vulkan Meradalir, welcher drei Tage vorher ausgebrochen war, und immer noch aktiv war. Sicherheitsleute und eine Ambulanz waren vor Ort, und es hatte bereits Plakate mit Verhaltensregeln.

On the layout plan we’ve marked in blue the way we walked on June 3rd to see the lava of last year’s eruption of the Fagradalsfjall, and in red the way we walked now. The pink shows last year’s lava.

Auf der Übersichtskarte haben wir zwei Wege eingezeichnet: in blau den Weg, welchen wir am 3.Juni gewandert sind, um die Lava vom letztjährigen Vulkanausbruch des Fagradalsfjall zu sehen, und in rot den Weg, welchen wir jetzt gegangen sind. Die rosa Fläche zeigt die Lava vom letzten Jahr.

We had to walk up for nearly two hours, quite steep at times, through fields with a lot of debris – it wasn’t an easy walk, and the weather didn’t help either. It was quite cold, and drizzling rain most of the time. I wasn’t very keen on going…

Wir hatten eine Strecke von fast zwei Stunden vor uns, manchmal recht steil, und oft durch Geröllfelder – es war kein Sonntagsspaziergang, und das Wetter half auch nicht. Es war recht kalt, und fast ständig Nieselregen. Ich war nicht sehr erpicht auf diese Wanderung…

Manchmals führte der Weg nahe an der Lava vom letzten Jahr vorbei.

Finally, the first glimpse of the volcano ! The hill was like a natural tribune.

Welch ein Schauspiel der Natur !

It was impressive how we felt the heat, even though we were about 200 metres away from the lava.

Es war eindrücklich, wie spürbar die Hitze war, obwohl wir doch ca. 200 m von der Lava entfernt waren!

It was quite a spectacle, despite the fog and the poor visibility !

Es war ein echtes Spektakel, trotz Nebel und schlechter Sicht !

The way down only took about one and a half hours. It was after 7 pm, but still people were coming up, in a steady flow.

Wir benötigten nur ca. eineinhalb Stunden für den Rückweg. Es war nach 19 Uhr, aber immer noch kamen uns Leute entgegen, in einem ständigen Strom.
