Kylemore Estate / Lough Inagh / Pine Island – 19.7.2023

Still at the campsite, we boilt some eggs, with the aid of sparrows.

Then we drove to Kylemore Abbey. I saw some eels the first time in my life!

We admired the abbey from a distance, because we first wanted to see the Walled Garden.

There were lots of shuttle buses going back and forth for anybody who didn’t want to walk the half hour.

There are lovely trees along the road, some with a history: Mitchell Henry planted 9 pine trees, for his nine children. Eight of them are still standing today!

Some trees have a weird growth, and many are full of moss.

There is a little waterfall and a lovely stone bridge.

This little hut was used as a jam house by the nuns.

The Walled Garden.

It’s big and spacious, and full of wonderful plants and flowers.

There used to be quite a few different greenhouses, but most of them are in ruins.

The Head Gardener had a big and posh house !

Some more impressions from the garden.

One section has a lot of different ferns.

Information panels told all sorts of interesting facts, a.o. about the Connemara Pony.

Back to the abbey first on the „Flora & Fauna Trail“, then the „Dawros River Walk“.

Some of the area would have been full of colour of the rhododendron…

We love the twisted and gnarled trees!

The Diamond Hill (from Connemara National Park) was always in the background.

We really enjoyed this walk in the woods 🙂

The trail led partly along a little stream.

Near the entrance for the estate were a few buildings with different purposes, a.o. a chocolate kitchen 🙂

We then visited the Abbey.

Unfortunately Mitchell’s adored wife Margaret died when she was still young. Mitchell had this church built in her honour.

Margaret’s remains lie in this mausoleum.

Not far from there is the Ironing Stone.

The castle is situated in a truly gorgeous environment 🙂

We then drove south …

… and past the picturesque Lough Inagh !

At the end of it is Pine Island.

We chose to spend the night at Eyrephort Beach, the wonderful beach a local recommended last Sunday.

We were rewarded with a beautiful sunset 🙂
