Spiddal / Aughnanure Castle / Lough Corrib – 26.-28.7.2023

It was raining again… We did our washing and some shopping, then we drove onto several little islands, connected by bridges: Lettermore, Gorumna and Lettermullen. We couldn’t see much of the countryside 😦

Actually we were looking for a Bed and Breakfast. I wasn’t feeling very good because of my cold, and we were dying for a nice comfortable shower! The showers on the campsites are not bad, sometimes, but it’s never luxury 😉 We found a great place in Spiddal: Ard Eoinin 🙂

We spent two nights there, and during the day we walked around Spiddal …

… down to the pier …

… along the promenade …

… and to the beach.

We also walked in the other direction …

… to a Craft Village and Café.

The coastal road is part of the „Wild Atlantic Way“.

Spiddal is located in the Gaeltacht area, where the Irish language is the main language spoken. Another detail about this region, or actually most of Connemara, is that they often store the turf in their garages. Something else we noticed: there are an awful lot of recycle bins for glass. Obviously beer is mostly sold in glass bottles 😉

On the 28th we drove upcountry.

We stopped at Aughnanure Castle. Kurt went to have a look at it.

The castle was built in the 16th century.

The castle is a well kept example of an „Irish tower building“.

Driving on towards Oughterard …

… where we stopped for a great coffee at „My Little Flower“.

Lough Corrib is the largest lake in the Republic of Ireland, and it contains more than 1300 islands!

We spent the night in an idyllic place with a view of the lake, at the „Hill of Doon“.
