Llanfairpwll… – 5.8.2023

It was raining… We drove east, more or less along the coast.

Penmon Point was our next destination. From there you have a good view of Puffin Island. The lighthouse Trwyn Du is worth taking a photo of 🙂

The café is very colourful. Of course they also sell icecream for dogs.

A few impressions from the onward journey, amongst others a typical bus stop.

The castle of Beaumaris was never finished. We abstained from a visit, because the village seemed to overflow with tourists.

The village with the longest official name in Europe (58 letters) is called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch. A shoemaker came up with this name to make the village more attractive for business and tourism.

We were astounded that the gate (for the train, not for the other traffic!) was opened and closed manually !

To get off the island of Anglesey you have to cross one of the two bridges. The Menai suspension bridge was opened in 1826 and was the world’s first major suspension bridge! The Britannia bridge was destroyed in 1970 and partially had to be re-built. It’s now a combined train and road bridge.

The Menai Strait is a narrow stretch of shallow tidal water about 12,5 m long. The differential tides at the two ends of the strait cause very strong currents to flow in both directions. It’s one of the most difficult navigation channels in the world.

Bangor is across the channel. We stopped there to do our washing. The washing machines are not always easy to find…
