Brecon Beacons: Carreg Cennen Castle – 2.9.2023

When we are travelling, we often have a deadline for when we have to be back home. That’s the reason we didn’t extend our stay on Gower. We headed towards Brecon Beacons instead, driving past the salt marshes on Gower, and the Hendy viaduct near Pontarddulais.

Brecon Beacons is a mountainous region and national park. It’s most likely worth it to spend a long time there, but we decided on a couple of days to get a taste for it –> Brecon Beacons.

Since we didn’t know where to go, we started at the edge of the national park, at Castle Carreg Cennen.

We first had a coffee at the wonderfully renovated café / shop. The sign „Duck or Grouse“ is hilarious 🙂

It was getting too late to visit the castle AND go for a walk, so we just went for a walk.

Apparently there are two different rocks: limestone (supporting ash trees) and sandstone (supporting oak trees).

We love being in the woods, and the trees there are lovely 🙂 Every now and again we caught a glimpse of the castle.

The path went up and down. At times we were above the forest …

… sometimes further down, near a little stream.

There the path was very muddy, and sometimes we had to cross big puddles.

Finally we reached the castle again.

Not far from the castle seemed to be a good spot to spend the night.

As it happens it was the most beautiful spot 🙂 The atmosphere was phenomenal!

The sunset couldn’t have been more gorgeous 🙂

The route we travelled by camper van that day.
