Gower: Rhossili / Worm’s Head – 1.9.2023

When we woke up, we had visitors on the carpark 🙂

After breakfast we drove to Llangynydd (still on Gower). Gower peninsula is the first area in the UK to be designated as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

We were lucky to get a pitch on the campsite – it was on a field where the owners only want very few visitors.

We started our walk from there. The village Llangynydd is rather small.

We then walked up the hill Rhossili Down.

Lots of gorse and heather!

From up there we could see „our“ campsite. The big, more commercial campsite, also came into view.

The coast with the dunes looked very special!

Rhossili Down is a hill that stretches above the entire length of the beach.

Remains of the second world war are still up there.

Lots of paragliders were enjoying the view!

We had a good view of Worm’s Head.

We had plenty of opportunity to take photos 😉

When we reached Middleton, we noticed some beautiful hens! We felt sorry for a horse that was being chased away 😦

Fall Bay with its lovely sandy beach. There were actually people bathing in the sea!

It was rockier to the right and left of the sandy beach.

Some of the rocks looked really interesting!

Worm’s Head is a peninsula or an island, depending on the tide. Apparantly there are strong currents and it’s dangerous to cross when the tide comes in.

There are plenty of signs to warn people, and even a watchstation with volunteers.

We didn’t cross because the tide was coming in.

Walking towards Rhossili we saw some horses that looked like brewery horses.

The weather was wonderful, and so were the colours 🙂

We went for a bite to eat at the pub. Obviously Dylan Thomas was very fond of Gower and of Rhossili in particular.

St Mary’s church was built in the 14th century. A small detail: a dog bowl with water next to the entrance 🙂

The path back was along the hill and above the beach (which was getting narrower by the minute). Worm’s Head was now an island.

The path was very soggy at times. We saw quite a few hares.

In the end we rushed to get back to the campsite in time for the sunset. We just made it!

The route we travelled by camper van that day.
