Belle-Île-en-Mer 10.7. – 1.8.2024

Our three-week holiday in Belle-Île was fantastic! It’s a beautiful island, almost like the whole of Brittany in miniature. We were there with my son and his family. Unfortunately he had a bicycle accident and therefore our holiday didn’t turn out as planned. This blog is a summary of our walks.

Some impressions on the way to the fortress in Le Palais.

The fortress ‚the Citadel‘.

Walk from Le Palais to Port Fouquet.

Birds, butterflies and flowers 🙂

Some cute details …

… and a lovely coastline.

After a tasty snack we watched a great sunset 🙂

The whole 3 weeks we stayed at the campsite Le Bordénéo.

At Port Fouquet Kurt and Domi once rented a kayak.

Another day we walked from Port Fouquet to Port Poyed.

Again, lots of butterflies and bees!

The path varied a lot.

Countless little beaches lined the coast.

We walked back inland and finished that lovely day in the pool.

Belle-Île is full of flowers 🙂

Another day we walked to Sauzon inland and back to Port Poyed along the coast.

In Sauzon we met my son and his family who drove there by bike.

After a tasty galette we walked back along the coast.

We were lucky with the weather 🙂

We often had to walk up and down many steps!

Sauzon was the start of another walk. The image of the deceased but famous Sarah Bernhardt is omnipresent.

In Ster-Vraz we reached the coast.

Interesting lichen and stones.

There is a golf course – sometimes they have to hit their balls across bays!

Lots of lizards, cormorants, seagulls and choughs.

Stacks and rocks in the sea.

The coast towards the Pointe des Poulains.

There are many warning signs!

Pointe des Poulains. Sarah Bernhardt lived here in the summer months (for the last 30 years of her life). Sarah was the most popular French stage actress in the late 19th and early 20th century.

There were too many people for us. We’ll go and visit the museum another time. We carried on walking along the coast.

Lots of hydrangeas …

… and interesting stones.

The path towards Sauzon.

The bay of Sauzon.

In the evening we enjoyed a concert of Luc Box at the campsite.

The coastal route from Ster-Vraz to the Plage de Donnant we have to do another time. Our next walk started at the Plage de Donnant.

Heading south.

The water was crystal clear 🙂

Port Coton with its rock needles (made famous by Claude Monet).

We managed to walk a bit further till we reached the foghorn …

… until we got a phone call that Stephen was in hospital after a bike accident 😦

That accident changed our holiday plans. Luckily the injuries weren’t too grave – but bad enough. We still enjoyed the sunset in the evening though.

Domi’s birthday we celebrated with a scrumptious brunch at the Castel Clara at Port Goulphar.

Kurt and I left the young ones at the beach …

Kurt und ich haben die Jungen am Strand zurückgelassen …

… while we walked along the coast to the south (to the „elephant rocks“) …

… and to the north (to the rock needles).

A birthday drink back at the restaurant …

… and a nice dinner at the campsite, getting spoilt by the friendly waiting staff 🙂

Due to our changed plans we didn’t manage to walk all around the island. The part from the elephant rocks (near Domois) to the Pointe de Grand Village is still missing. We did undertake a couple more hikes, e.g. from the Plage d’Herlin to the Pointe du Grand Village. The path from the Plage d’Herlin to Port Maria is on the agenda for next time.

Many flowers lined the path …

… and the colours of the scenery were dazzling!

… und die Farben der Landschaft waren umwerfend!

Again, we were very lucky with the weather.

At the Pointe du Grand Village we turned inland and walked to Bangor, to our favourite crêperie Chez Renée.

After the meal we had to walk back to our van.

One day we left Stephen at Port Andro. The rest of us drove to Port Maria and from there we walked back to Port Andro.

It wasn’t a long hike, but when you take as many photos as we do, even a short hike takes a long time 😉

Back at Port Andro.

Kurt and I then walked inland back to Port Maria …

… with a stop at l’Atelier …

… and via Locmaria.

Another part of the coast is from Port Andro to Les Grands Sables.

There were lots and lots of flowers, butterflies and insects!

No blue sky, but still beautiful 🙂

We were now on the northern side of the island.

The path is called „Sentier Côtier – GR34“ here on Belle-Île (or rather „Sentier des Douaniers – GR34“ in the rest of Brittany) – this path goes all around Brittany and it measures 2000 km!

Les Grands Sables, a beach with fine sand.

Inland back to Port Andro.

Port Andro. Eating well and playing 🙂

A jazz concert at the campsite.

One day we only went to Les Grands Sables. Domi even went for a dip in the water (not the only time on this holiday!)

Kurt rented a kayak, and Domi a stand-up paddle 🙂

Kurt and I took a little stroll, too.

Next time we visit Belle-Île we will walk the route from Les Grands Sables to the Plage de Bordardoué, which we missed this time. The path from Le Palais to the Plage de Bordardoué we did hike on a very sunny day.

The Plage de Bordardoué is amazing!

At places like that I’m full of admiration 🙂

We finished this walk back in Le Palais.

Belle-Île is really worth a visit! 🙂
