driving to Sicily (part two: Gargano) 27. + 28.12.25

Gargano is the spur on the Italian boot –> see Gargano. We stayed at the campsite Lido Salpi for three nights.

It’s south of Manfredonia and right on the beach.

I got up too late to watch the sun rise…

The village on top of the hill is Monte Sant‘ Angelo. The terraced houses are very old. There are olive trees everywhere.

We drove to the national park to go hiking.

The path led from Mergoli to Vignanotica.

The view was great and the weather fantastic.

Soon we saw the white cliffs of Vignanotica.

The cliffs reminded me of the area around Durdle Door (in Dorset, GB). It’s gorgeous 🙂

This beach is likely to be crowded in summer – now we were almost the only ones!

On the way back.

The next day we drove over the hills of the national park. Our first stop was at San Giovanni Rotondo.

We were interested in the church San Pio da Pietrelcina –> church San Pio

We don’t often go to see churches, but this one is truly amazing, built with huge chunks of limestone.

In the basement there are several chapels and countless mosaics. Lots of gold everywhere …

It was worth a visit.

We then followed the road through the national park. It led through holm oak and beech woods. After every kilometre, there was another road sign to indicate winding roads for yet another kilometre 😉

The northern side of the spur.

The town of Peschici. We only drove through it …

… because we still wanted to see the town of Vieste.

Vieste is a lovely town, with many narrow little streets.

We walked around for quite some time, enjoying the nearly empty town. We wonder what it would look like in summer…

Due to the late hour we didn’t go down to see the monolith of Pizzomunno.

The main part of the historic centre was lit up with Christmas lights.
