driving to Sicily (part five: a detour to the ferry) 3.1. – 6.1.26

The bad weather forecast prompted us to traverse to the other side of Italy’s „foot“. The roads were pretty bad to start with …

… then we travelled on fairly new roads, over long bridges and through many tunnels (some with a speed limit of 30 km/h, which nobody followed).

The Ionian Sea was very rough.

In Monasterace Marina we turned inland towards Bivongi.

We stayed for the night on a parking site for hikers. From there you could take a „taxi“ to the waterfall Cascate del Marmarico.

A big playground, a picnic area and some ponds enhance this place.

The following day we hiked to the waterfall (Cascate del Marmarico), after a short drive in our camper van. The roads are lousy 😉 Some of the signposts are old, some are pretty new.

A thermal spring is up there! Otherwise there is „only“ nature, and we also didn’t see any other hikers.

A few little waterfalls on the way.

The last section took us along the little stream. It was beautiful 🙂

The waterfall is 100 metres high.

We wondered if wild boars were walking along there…

It’s just a shame that nature gets used as a dump everywhere 😦

At the end of the walk we had a nice meal at the „Vecchia Miniera“.

Horses were grazing on the playground 🙂 The weather was a bit dull the next morning.

We drove back to the coast and south. On the way we washed some clothes, and in Roccella Jonica we had a little walk. The sea was still very rough …

… and the weather changed from foggy to sunny to cloudy.

After spending the night at the campsite Jonio Blu (lots of campers, but hot showers!) we carried on south, with a stop in Lazzaro.

Reaching Villa San Giovanni we went to the first open ticket office. We were told that the ferry to Sicily leaves immediately.

We witnessed how an entire train was loaded onto a ferry!

Once on the ferry we realized that we weren’t travelling to Messina, but to Tremestieri. Who cares – we were finally going to Sicily 🙂
