Sicily: Monte Cofano – 19.-23.1.26

Monte Cofano and its surroundings are probably our favourite place in Sicily 🙂

While we stayed in Nubia we visited this place a few times. To get there you have to drive around Monte Erice. The landscape is beautiful, apart from a few piles of rubbish left behind by the storm…

Northeast of Monte Cofano is the village Castelluzzo.

Der Golfo di Cofano is fascinating in many ways: it reminds us of Iceland and the beach is special!

Looking towards San Vito Lo Capo.

We also looked down at the floor 😉

The rocks are really very special!

We spent ages walking up and down the beach.

Shell fossils.

We took so many photos – it’s difficult to leave most of the photos out…

In some places the sand was red.

At the foot of Monte Cofano are the ruins of a tuna factory. Later in this blog are some photos of it.

Walking back to our van.

Another day we wanted to walk around Monte Cofano. On the way there we passed a few quarries.

At the beginning of the walk we were turned away by a man in a cubbyhole 😦 The path is closed due to repair work.

We drove around the mountain to approach the path in the middle.

Unfortunately there was a fence, too. But no person to stop us from going for a hike anyway 😉

The reason for the repair works was a huge fire in July 2025. Images of the disaster can be found online.

We saw the disused tuna factory down below. We didn’t walk all the way down because of the man in the cubbyhole…

Instead we went down on the other side. Not very far though – it was extremely steep and rocky.

We didn’t want to give up! The following day we tried from the other side of Monte Cofano, in Cornino. Call us stubborn 😉

The „Grotta Mangiapane“ is accessible from there, but it’s closed at the moment (low season?). On the first photo you can see the steep slope that we went halfway down the day before.

Yet again, there was a man in a cubbyhole… But he let us pass! We should just be careful.

In some places we came across barriers or warning signs.

The tower „Torre San Giovanni“.

We saw some wild goats. Soon we caught a glimpse of San Vito Lo Capo.

The path ran along the foot of steep cliffs.

We loved the walk 🙂

We reached the „Punta Croce“ …

… and then the „Tonnara del Cofano“, the disused tuna factory.

We didn’t want to go further – the man in the cubbyhole 😉

We could see threatening clouds from a distance!

We hurried back because we didn’t want to get wet. It’s not easy to dry clothes in our van…

As soon as we were back in our van, it started pouring down!

The downpour was soon over. We were happy that we could go on this wonderful hike after all 🙂
