Sicily: drive to the „Riserva Naturale Orientata Oasi Faunistica di Vendicari“ – 10.+11.2.26

The weather was great when we left the campsite in Pozzallo.

We drove east along the coast. The recent storm caused a great deal of damage. There was sand on the roads …

… and even roadblocks.

Again, many greenhouses, where tomatoes are apparently growing.

We passed a lake with some flamingos.

The southernmost point of Sicily at the Capo delle Correnti.

In Portopalo di Capo Passero we looked for a place to eat something. The restaurant we found was like a canteen. But the food was tasty and not expensive.

Impressions from the journey north.

Noto is probably worth a visit, but we didn’t get any closer than that.

The Oasi park campsite.

It was still light, so we wanted to go to the nature reserve „Riserva naturale orientata Oasi Faunistica di Vendicari“ (what a name!). But it was closed for the night. The road there was terrible, and there were hardly any places to park or turn around.

The following morning we drove to the official entrance gate.

The first two of a few observation huts.

Mainly flamingos and coots.

On to the beach – but there were lots of blocked or flooded paths along the shore.

We walked along the beach a bit …

… and then towards the disused tuna fish factory.

Allegedly there are lots of migratory birds in this nature reserve.

The tuna factory.

Torre Sveva, a 15th-century fortification tower.

We could have carried on walking, but we decided to turn round.

Another observation hut.

And suddenly there were hundreds of flamingos 🙂

The evening light made it look even more special!

We rounded off the day with a lovely dinner.
